After nearly 40 years of leadership in financial services and an enduring presence in philanthropy and community outreach, Paula A. Stopera, President/CEO, will retire in May 2019.
As Paula passes the torch to the next generation of leaders, we honor her legacy. Her tireless devotion to CAP COM members, support for local non-profits and businesses, and dedication to individuals and families in need, has made the Capital Region a better, kinder place.

Message to Members from Paula Stopera
Stepping forward from one year to the next always feels so positive, a fresh start to fill with our hopes and dreams. Over the next 12 months, we will meet new people, experience new places, and embark on new adventures we could never imagine.
With the new year, new beginnings await. I’d like to tell you about mine.
In May, I plan to retire from CAP COM and pass the torch to the next generation. As we leave 2018 behind and move ahead, I find myself thinking a lot about where we’ve been.
So much has changed in the world since I was hired as a CAP COM employee 39 years ago. Leading the credit union as President/CEO since 2004, through times of immense change, has been demanding, sometimes daunting, and thrilling. This has been the career of a lifetime.
It’s true that financial services are a “relationship business.” Yet, when you hear others say this, I suspect they’re talking about profits, not people. Here, relationships with members mean much more. In fact, I’ve staked my professional life on it.
We’re building something special at CAP COM, and I’m so happy you’re with us. Caring for each other while providing financial services might seem like an odd combination. For us, the two are inseparable.
When I retire, the executive leadership team will maintain its steadfast commitment to you. It is a group that brims with talent: steady hands, brilliant minds, and compassionate leaders.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am excited to introduce Christopher McKenna, your credit union’s next President/CEO. Chris has served on the executive leadership team with me for the past eight years. He is an enormous asset to the organization and advocate for members.
I look forward to continuing to work closely with Chris to facilitate a smooth transition. You can expect more details in the coming months.
Decades ago, I remember witnessing the transformative power of people helping people at CAP COM. It was a revelation. At the time, I secretly wished we could make a real difference in people’s lives on a much grander scale.
Today, we help 140,000 members manage their finances and fulfill their dreams. Reaching out to our neighbors in need through the CAP COM Cares Foundation is a major priority.
Serving you is, and always will be, the ultimate privilege.
