‘Tis the season to share good times and great memories with friends and family. But, it is also the season when data thieves are on the prowl for unsuspecting online shoppers.
To help ensure your holidays start and stay merry, here a few simple tips you can follow to protect your accounts and your identity while you hunt for bargains and are buying that special something for that special someone.
1 Only shop on secure websites
Make sure your online shopping is completed on a website that starts with https://. Sometimes the “s”, which shows the website is secure, does not appear until you are on the actual order page. You can also look for a closed padlock or an unbroken key at the bottom of the screen.
2 Monitor your transactions
Make your online purchases with a credit or debit card you know is protected against unauthorized purchases. And, always monitor your transactions frequently so you can quickly take care of any problems immediately.
3 Use familiar websites
Make sure you either know or research the company you will use for the online purchase. Also look for a physical business address and a phone number on the website. This will give you contact information in case of problems or questions.
4 When in doubt, throw it out
If something just doesn’t seem right during your shopping experience, don’t continue with the order.
