Maximize Your Benefit

The School Tax Relief (STAR) program reduces the property tax burden for eligible homeowners in New York State.

Recent changes to the STAR program will affect the benefits some participants receive from year to year.

Generally, the changes pertain to the difference between receiving a credit (check) versus an exemption (direct tax reduction), as well as income limits for higher earners.

According to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance’s website, for homeowners whose income is $250,000 or less:

If you currently receive the STAR exemption, you can choose to register for the STAR credit to receive a check instead; you may receive a greater benefit.

If you make more than $250,000 and less than or equal to $500,000, the program is changing for you, too.

To see how these changes could affect you and find out how to maximize your benefit, be sure to review the latest STAR program updates.
